On January 20, 2025, Donald Trump was sworn in as the President of the United States for the second time. For a leader of one of the most powerful nations in the world, he has shown an uncanny perspective as is evident from his work style. Not only did he commence his first day by fulfilling his electoral promises but he is also committed towards working on his agenda with acute promptness and alacrity.
Executive Orders on Day One
The most significant order unveiled by Trump was cancellation of birthright citizenship, which had been enshrined in U.S. law for over a century. According to the executive order the practice of granting U.S. citizenship to children born on American soil to foreign nationals has been brought to a close. It signalled a drastic shift in the US immigration policy.
Trump also made his intentions explicit to impose tariffs on imports from BRICS nations, including China, India, and Brazil. He threatened a “100% tax” on countries in favour of non dollar trade. These bold moves would reshape global trade dynamics while furthering America’s economic interests. The international allies expressed concerns over the steep tariffs on long term relations with the US.
The diversity and inclusion programs in federal agencies were dismantled as directed by Trump’s order. This debatable decision to remove employees working on such programs was perceived by many as an attack on the marginalized communities. The declaration of national emergency on U.S.’s southern border with Mexico to address the border security crisis was unprecedented. Additionally 1,600 pardons were issued to those prosecuted for their role in the 2021 U.S. Capitol riots, the U.S.’s exit from the Paris Climate Agreement and
the World Health Organization were other notable developments in the US landscape.
Trump seems to be emboldened by his victory as he undertook peculiar decisions like the takeover of the Panama Canal, threatening Denmark with a plan to takeover Greenland, recognition of only two genders and his intent on imposing a travel ban for certain countries.
A New Era of Governance
On the very first day Trump utilised executive power to address persistent issues like illegal immigration and global trade imbalances. However he was criticised and his actions were questioned. Legal experts stated that a constitutional amendment is required for suspension of birthright citizenship, the executive order could not alter it. While some saw it as a necessary reform to address illegal immigration, others viewed it as an attempt to undermine the rights of U.S. citizens.
Trade tariffs imposed on BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) was also criticised. Economists raised the alarm for trade wars that could be triggered with some of the world’s largest economies due to such steep tariffs. This would negatively impact the US economy. Some felt tariffs were necessary to protect US industries, but at the same time it would complicate trade relationships with other countries.
The suspension of diversity programs in federal agencies which was central to US government policy for decades was halted. This angered civil rights groups and advocacy organizations. In a country where issues related to race and social justice remain deeply divisive, such a move by Trump is very controversial.
A Bold Vision or Divisive Move
Donald Trump uncovered his commitment to the vision of American exceptionalism he campaigned on. His executive actions, from the canceling of birthright citizenship to implementing high trade tariffs and suspending diversity programs have multifaceted repercussions. The way Trump sidelined Congress by aggressively using executive orders, raises concerns about more concentration of power in the presidency. This can have concerning implications for democracy. However his supporters are viewing controversial actions as long awaited reforms.
Conclusion
The republican leader is pursuing his “America first” policy relentlessly owing to the several executive orders passed. Trump laid great emphasis on economic growth, immigration reforms, and redefining governance. They bear the potential to strengthen America’s foundation. Although the bold initiatives have sparked debates across the world, they also pave the way for progress and development of the country. Implementation of the executive orders would play a pivotal role in shaping domestic policies, international relations, and America’s global position.
