Technology, Power, and the Evolving Global Order

Concept Note

We know that technology evolved from the use of primitive tools amongst primates. As societies became more sophisticated, and civilizations developed, tools became more sophisticated too. Specific technological inventions, like the wheel, revolutionized human societies in many ways: in warfare, in agriculture, and in travel. Technology has had a huge and abiding impact on human societies and may be said to be the cornerstone of human civilization. Through the ages, the main impact of technology on human society has been in agriculture and warfare. Of these two, the latter is perhaps the most important, given the propensity of warfare in human affairs. Power shall be defined in terms of warfare. That is, the ability of one social force to subjugate another through military means. This argument follows on from our assertion in the description of the impact of technology in human affairs through history that it has been most poignantly felt in warfare. Technological advancements in warfare throughout the ages have defined the rise and fall of civilizations. The invention of gun-powder and the cannon, for example, had a dramatic effect on how war was fought, and allowed, for example for the conquest of the Aztec Empire by a relatively inferior force of Spanish soldiers. Prior to this, the invention of the bow and arrow was decisive in many battles, including the defeat of a superior French force at Agincourt and Crecy, by the English.

For the purposes of this conference, what is called ‘Evolving Global Order’ will be defined primarily in terms of global capitalism. It remains to be seen in this thematic proposal how global capitalism plays itself out, and how it relates to the two prior themes of technology and power. Capitalism defeated communism at the end of the Cold War between the USA and USSR, and quickly became the dominant global economic system. Capitalism is based on the exploitation of human labour and natural resources for profit. This is its basic nature.  It is against this background that the Forum for Global Studies proposes to organize a three-day International Conference on the theme, “Technology, Power, and the Evolving Global Order” on 01- 03 October 2022. The following themes are proposed for deliberation:

  1. Technology and global society
  2. Contemporary warfare and national security
  3. Energy resources and A Game of Great Powers
  4. Revisiting Gandhian Philosophy: A Quest for Global Peace
